LASIK Surgery

LASIK Surgery

If you're tired of wearing eyeglasses or contact lenses, laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK) surgery may be you.
LASIK surgery has a good track record and most people are satisfied with the results.

LASIK surgery is a type of refractive eye surgery. During the procedure, we create a flap in the cornea, and then use a laser to reshape the cornea and correct focusing problems in the eye. LASIK surgery is best for people who have a moderate but STABLE nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism, which causes blurry vision.

By age 45 people begin losing ability to focus on nearby objects (presbyopia), which results in difficulty reading small print or doing other close-up tasks. The condition may continue to worsen until about age 65. Some people choose to have this problem solved with LASIK, correcting one eye for distant vision, and the other eye for near vision. Not everyone is a good candidate for LASIK surgery. Your surgeon will perform a complete assessment beforehand to determine this.

If you are under the age of 21, are pregnant, or the strength of your glasses/contact lenses have changed recently then you are not a candidate for LASIK. Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) is sometimes used instead of LASIK for specific reasons. PRK removes the thin surface layer of the cornea (epithelium). The surgeon then uses a laser to flatten the cornea or make its curve steeper. It may take three to six months to reach peak visual improvement but the long term outcomes are as good as LASIK.
